Our History

In 1905, J. Fred Scholl opened his insurance office in the State Bank Building now occupied by the First State Bank Shannon-Polo at 101 W Mason Street. With the State Bank closing in 1933, J. Fred moved his insurance business to his home until 1936. At this time he moved his office to the Illinois Freight House and shared occupancy with his brother Louis Scholl who ran the John Deere farm implement business. In the mid 1940’s Fred relocated his business to 108 N. Franklin, where his son Arthur Scholl joined him in business. Arthur and his son, Russell continued the business after Fred’s death in 1949. In 1953 Russell assumed ownership of the business following his father Arthur’s death.

As the business expanded, the need for more space prompted a move in 1955 back to 101 W. Mason Street, now the Polo National Bank building. In September of 1959, Scholl Insurance Agency again relocated, this time to the present address of 112 North Franklin Avenue. In 1974 Russell’s son-in-law, Richard D. Butler, joined the agency. In 1982 Russell retired and Richard and Gloria Butler purchased the ownership of the agency. In 1982 their daughter Robin joined the agency staff, followed in 1983 by her sister Tamela. April 1, 2005 Richard retired and Robin Duncan and Tamela Merdian purchased ownership of the agency. This makes Scholl Insurance Agency, Inc. a 5-generation family owned and operated business. 

We are licensed in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Our professional agents also offer license and title service as well notary public and fax services.

Our Team

Robin Duncan LUTCF, CIC and Tamela Merdian, LUTCF are both Life Underwriting Counselor graduates. Robin has also completed the rigorous schooling and testing to become a Certified Insurance Counselor. Together Robin and Tamela provide auto, home, life & health as well as commercial lines insurance.
